There are many reasons for a lawn to turn yellow .
How old is the lawn, has it ever been cored and raked?, what is the watering schedule in the summer, when did the yellowing show up?
Fertilizing it may burn whatever is left, if not applied at the right dilution or quantity. Has a dog peed on the spot?Check the condition of the soil underneath.
If you just moved in and found the lawn yellow, the most probable reason is that the previous owners never paid attention to it and it had dried up for lack of watering and feeding and the grass is dying. Examine the type of grass. You might have to hire a landscaper to dig up the old grass and resod the entire lawn

If you want to do it yourself, ask your neighborhood garden supply store. Bring a sample of the grass with its root system, and piece of the soil. It will take some work and he will be the best to help you out.

It sounds like you lawn is drying up.

Or did you over fertilize? That could cause the grass to burn out & turn yellow.

If thats the case you may have killed the grass.

You don't fertilize when the grass goes dormant.

All I have ever heard is that you water 1 inch of water per week.

What do other lawns near you look like & what is done to them?

Yellowing can be symptomatic of two primary things, Over-watering and Iron-deficiency. In the winter you should only be watering about 6 min. every 2-3 days. The general rule of thumb for watering is use the least amount of water that you canto keep it from turning brown. To restore Iron to the soil by an iron containing fertilizer that claims to be "non-burning" and apply according to the manufacturers instructions.
