I just got back last month from a 2 month vacation in a mountain region of the Adriatic coast. There were long, pristine nature trails everywhere, that delved deeply in every diretion. I would walk several miles alone every day... but I noticed a plethora of intricate sub-trails intertwining through the trails, tons of them, but they were not high enough for a human to have made them. When I asked my friends what created them, they said wild boar. First, do you think this is true? Second, if I was walking deep into the mountains surrounded by wild boar, I am very lucky to have not encountered them--but if I had, what could they have done to me? I would appreciate any assistance.

Meet Wild Boars

Depends on what time of year, where you are and whether you are a threat to them. I would have to suggest that the boar is not as savage as a sow with piglets. The sow has been known, out of the protective nature, to attack and knock people off motor cycles rounding up stock. The sow will generally harass until the piglets are safely away. But they still have tusks that can cause serious injuries.
During the mating season, testosterone can play a big part in any males behaviour, The males have larger tusks and tend to have a more muscular body.
I have faced two charges. One from a stroppy male that was wallowing in some long grass in a swamp and the other was from a wounded boar that I had shot. The charge is ferocious and tenacious. The head comes into play in a swinging fashion that causes the tusks to rip and tear. They try to knock the aggressor down and go for the crotch or vital areas causing as much damage as possible on the way in.
A friend has a sheep farm and he has told me horrific stories. The worst is that of the feral pig as a predator, a young lamb that he came across with the boar eating it, the boar had reached the kidneys and the lamb was still alive. The ewe was dead, gored by the boar trying to protect her lamb.
They are dangerous animals.

If cornered, they can be very dangerous, especially sows defending piglets. The can weigh, on average, 450 pounds, but some have tipped the scales at over 600 pounds. A chance encounter would not be too dangerous, if the boar has a retreat.

Yes a wild boar could have made those trails, if you see them again, look for tracks. They are also very aggressive animals who can and will attack and gore you. The best advice i was ever given was that if i ever encounter a boar, run. fast.

well boars can be very violent animals and can really hurt you if attacked. They can gore you with their 2 producting teeth. The best thing to do when being attack is to run zig zag towards it and passed it. Never walk away from it as it is a very fast animal. It will only move in a straight line, so we can confuse it by moving zig zag
