Because our life revolves around indian standard and we are happy too. That is incompetent to the core taught by our bureaucrats and govt servents and they are the slowest human beings on the whole universe.
There was a story, that goes like this. Once the Sage Narada presented one fruit of wisdom to lord shiva. And the Lord thought it will be appropriate that the kids should have the fruit. But the Lord had two sons and the fruit (of wisdom) will not work if it is divided. So the Lord had set a competition that whoever takes a trip around the world first will be given the fruit. So the second son started his trip in his peacock vehicle around the world. But the first son (Lord Ganesha) did a short cut saying that his parents are his world to him. And taken a full round of them and got the Fruit of Wisdom. So many of our athletes are known to somebody and we rarely search for talents beyond that known faces. I thing the Indians and the media will hold Sania for next 10 years as her ranking go downward. Our heart is not open to see any one beyond the local heroes. For eg. People at Kolkata want Ganguly for life. Chatishar want Dhoni. Andhra wants Laxman.
So The remedies are, watch and patronise any game other than cricket. Let there be no other occupation other than practising and playing the game. Strictly prohibit cricketers entering into product endorsing while they are in contract with BCCL.

Well, India is a very academic country. It's national sport is hockey. Now think, really think...Hockey isn't the most world renouncing sport. Maybe if we focused on our soccer team we would not only be nationally recognized, but we would conjure a more panoramic view of what India is really capable of. But again, we need more soccer skills, India didn't even make it to the qualifying rounds in the World Cup Soccer 2006 tournament because we were so bad.

There is no particular cause for this. I think it is because of neglegency by our national leaders as they become old and often forget these games which they may feel it won't help them.

The champions from schools, Colleges etc., should be selected and trained by professionals in respective field.
