I'm a teacher and once I had a garage sale and sold a bunch of the Christmas gifts (I call it Christmas crap) I had received from students over the years. The next-door-neighbor, whose son I taught, recognized one of the pieces of Christmas crap as something they had given me! Oops! We just laughed about it.

the stable ones I do, no longer ones that are trashed. and that i recycle Christmas enjoying cards. I shrink them on the fold, tape them on the kit, then write to who from whom. I in no way purchase those little issues, and if its on a bag, punch a hollow in a nook and tie it on with a ribbon or recycled bread bag ties.
