xbox 360 has "gears of war" out now and is capable of playing HD-DVD for $200 more
ps3 has blu-ray disc and "resistance: fall of man" out now
which is the better buy since they both cost the same if the HD-DVD player is added to the xbox360?

It depends upon which kind of TV you have or are planning to get.

If you have an HDTV with 1080p resolution, get a PS3, but if you
only have an HD ready TV or an HDTV with 720p resolution, then
you might as well just get an Xbox360.

PS3. Despite what some people try to say overall the PS3 is cheaper. You can get a 120GB PS3 slim for only $300. Now that is cheap. Also worth mentioning that PS3 dominated the exclusive titles this year (inFamous, Uncharted 2, Rachet and Clank Future : Tools of Destruction, Killzone 2, Fat Princess, etc. All 9.0 and above games on most video games websites, not to mention previous years exclusives like past R&C games, Uncharted 1, Resistence 1 and 2, etc.) Then there are your usual facts ; * Top of the line Blu Ray player * Free Web Browser * Free PSN * Free PS HOME Basically the PS3 tops the 360 in almost every way ( the only thing XBOX has on it's side is XBOX Live, which costs 50 bucks a year) Do yourself a favour and get a PS3

Okay, I just answered this question a bit ago. So I'll just cut and paste. Hope this helps you with your decision.

Okay, I have both. Although it may not be fair considering I have only one game and a few movies for the ps3 and over a dozen for the 360.
I have played both, I have had the 360 for over a year now and the ps3 for roughly 2 weeks. I still prefer the 360. I dont see a huge difference in graphics yet. Yes, I am running on an hdtv, through an hdmi cable. I am not able to get 1080p, but my television offers both 720p and 1080i.
I like being able to play blu ray movies on the ps3. There are some good high def visuals to see while playing a movie in high def. This is the only thing I have enjoyed so far with the ps3.
The 360, in my view is way better. I like the dashboard feature, I enjoy downloading all the retro arcade games I grew up on. As rudementary as they are, they are still good entertainment. I also enjoy the fact that now, if I wanted to I could download movies from the 360 rather than going down to the video store. They dont have a lot to choose from yet, but I see alot more coming in the future. You can also download television episodes from some of the most popular cable channels. ABC, NBC,Comedy Channel, MTV, MTV2, CBS. This allows you to download such shows as CSI, South Park, and many many more. The possibilities with the 360 blow me away.
I could go without the ps3 at this point. The 360's capabilities are endless. Granted, you lose some of the graphics the ps3 gives you.
If given the choice personally to choose betweeen the two...I would take the 360.

I have bought 6 games for the 360 since it came out, and I have loved them all. The graphics are phenomenal. Gears of War is one of the first games designed specifically for the 360 and it is unbelievable. Gears of War alone is worth choosing the 360 over the PS3. I will eventually own both, because the PS3 will come out with some exclusive games that I'm sure will be very good once they start utilizing the full processing power of that machine, but for now, don't worry about the blue ray and high definition crap. For great gaming right now, get the 360. Then get the PS3 when it catches up.

Don't get a PS3, whatever you do. The only thing that sets it apart from the 360 is the Blu-ray, which in my opinion is a load of ****. The Playstation 3 is a 360 with Sony written on it that plays dvd's in high definition. And myself, I'd rather watch my dvd's in good ol' standard definition than pay 600 bucks for a ps3 or even 200 for the 360 hd dvd drive. Plus, the only game I've seen so far that I want to play for PS3 is Metal Gear Solid 4, and there are rumors floating around that it may be coming to 360.

Note that the HD-DVD drive for Xbox-360 only plays HD-DVD movies and that there will be no games designed for play on it in that type of format meaning the max size for games on it will be 9 gig. Blu-Ray will support Blu Ray movie discs and Blu Ray Games and can hold upwards of 40 gigs or more so games can be up to 4 times larger meaning alot longer gameplay and better graphic loading and other things of that nature. You can get more games for the 360 right now but in my opinion alot of them suck. Gears of War has only about 8 hrs of gameplay with single player mode so to get the most out of it you have to buy X-Box Live and play it on there. PS3 has two built in graphics cards that are capable of producing better graphics than the 360 but at the moment the launch titles arent utilizing all the capability and it will probably be about 1/2 a year to a year before alot more titles of substance will be released. In terms of availabilty it is easy to go to any store and get a 360 right now where PS3s are literally impossible to find aside from ebay where people are ripping off people for hundreds over the origonal cost. I personally will buy all 3 of the next gen systems in time but right now don't find it really worth it. All the matter if you want alot more technology that will last you several years all bundled together...the PS3 or technology that is already a little behind the times and requires you to buy add ons to make it current ...the 360.

You Choose. Here are some pro's and con's for each.

PS3
Pro:
1. High Processing Power(good graphics)
2. Free online play
3. A few good exclusives

Con:
1. $500-$600
2. Because online play is free many 3rd party games will not support online multiplayer.
3. PS3 has lost a few 1st and 3rd party publishers and developers.
4. EA has claimed that it is harder to port games to the PS3 because of the Blu-ray technology. They stated that it will take a lot longer to port Crysis to the PS3 from the PC. So some game companies may not want to go through the hastle of porting their games over to the PS3.
5. Doesn't come with HD cables
6. Blu-ray takes up 2-4 times more space on a hard drive than regular format.
7. It will need 6 months to a year to work out all its bugs
8. If there are problems with your console, its on you.(Sony has proved in the past that they will not replace or repair reject consoles without having to pay $150-$200.
9. Can only play certain PS1 and PS2 games.

Xbox 360:
Pro:
1. Great Graphics
2. Xbox Live is better than ever
3. Super comfortable controller
4. Has gained many 1st and 3rd party publisher and developers.
5. Great games
6. Bugs have already been worked out
7. Peter Jackson(director of Lord of the Rings and King Kong) will be working exclusively with Microsoft.
8. Metal Gear Solid 4(the PS3's killer app) has been rumored to be coming to the Xbox 360.(this months issue of EGM)
9. Microsoft may be trying to by Capcom(Resident Evil, Dead Rising)
10. Great accessories
11. Can play Xbox games
12. Exclusive content for GTA IV

Con:
1. $50 dollars for Live, but is totally worth it.
2. Can't play all Xbox games, but most of the good ones are playable, and more are becoming available.
3. HD-DVD player is extra, but is one of the best looking
HD-DVD players out there.(in my opinion)

The PS3 may have slightly better graphics, but the 360 is better in almost every other way. Besides most game companies don't take advantage of the power of the systems. Just like the last-gen games, no one showed the true power of the Xbox until Ubisoft unleashed Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.

I think its kind of like the difference between Plasma and LCD. Sure the Plasmas(PS3) look better(not much better), but they also don't last as long and have a better chance of getting a picture burnt in on the screen. While the LCDs(Xbox 360) are cheaper, look great, have a less chance of burn-in, and are slightly more compact. The LCD's have more bang for your buck.

Xbox 360 by far buddy. PS3 will still end up costing you more. You don't need the HD-DVD now, they don't have a good library out yet. 360 has a good library of games out now compared to the PS3. Most of the hot titles for PS3 are not coming out anytime soon. 360 does have hot titles around the corner. Not to mention Gears of War is hella sick. Something is so satisfying when you sneak up behind someone and give him the ol' chainsaw.

obviously the choice is xbox 360, i think it has better graphics, the ps3 has major problems of melting game discs, and most importantly the 360 has much better games. Future games available for only the 360 are Halo3, halowars, deadrising, fable 2, etc. In addition u can play old xbox games on the 360, so think about the money saved by not by a ps3. The live is better with the 360 also.

The PS3 is better than Xbox 360 almost in every aspect. But, in my opinion, of the titles for PS3 are quite interesting, except Resistance:Fall of Man, Call of Duty 3 (you can buy it on the PS2) and Medal of Honor Airborne (also available on the PS2).

I suggest that you wait for some months for Sony to fix the bugs and larger their library of games.

For the meantime, you can buy an Xbox 360 or buy the PS3 and play PS2 games on it.
