they probably began to develop a fondness for one another. it was such close quarters, gazing into each other's eyes was the only way to share a moment without everyone knowing. i haven't seen the movie or read the book since 7th grade(for me that was 1987), so i'm not exactly sure. if they looked at each other at the end of the movie, it's probably because the Nazis were right outside the door.

I read the book like 8 years ago, but I do believe that it was because she was starting to get some feelings towards him. Sadly everything turns for the worse so nothing ever really unravels. :-(
