from the looks of it, you didnt do anything, just power off and then on your filter an hour later. now, that totally doesnt make any sense. filters do not benefit from an hour's break but if you were doing it to test if it could still work, well, you found that answer out real quick.

if you power it off, you might as well take it out and have it cleaned out.

i suspect the filter was already clogged up and overworked and the break was all it took to stop being able to start spinning again. so do a filter cleanup, that should fix the problem. if it doesn't you might have some clogged piping too. or else the gears are too worn out from lack of maintenance.

another condition may be due to temperature difference. after it has been running at operational temp (which can be quite high compared to the temperature of the tank water), and then it cools off completely, some of the spinning parts of the filter may get stuck. what you can do is take the filter out of the tank and see if you can manually assist to spin up the moving parts. let it run for a while until ambient temp, then power off and put the filter back in the water, and power on again quickly once it's back in place but not cooled off yet. dont try to oil the filter motor as oil will just pollute the tank. filters are designed to run until their intended lifetime is up

You have to tell us what type of filter it is.

Certain cannister filter need to be prime if you dry them out. And certain type of filter like Hang-on-Filter needs to be top up with water once it's stopped. Submerge filters should start normally after stopping.

Anyway when you turn on the power, can you hear or feel the motor of the filter running? If you do, the filter should be okay and only require priming or top up depending on what type it is.

BTW DO NOT let the motor continue to run if no water is going thru the pump, it might burn out and cause a fire if you're not careful.

The first question I have to ask is why are you giving it an hour break? Filters are meant to run continually.

What kind of filter is it? Post that and we can help diagnose what the problem is.

Make sure there is no algae in it and make sure the motor is pushed together correctly....these are both very common problems that cause filters to quit....it might also be a faulty filter. In that case return it.

naw its probally not broke - i use to have to take the tube that goes from the top of the filter to the water in and out several times to get mine to work, sometimes i would have to slam it in there, dont break it but u know tap on it, lift the filter up an inch and let it fall back into place, i dont know why this use to fix mine - just dont scare the mess out your fish - good luck -
