For each letter except the first C, you have 2 choices of which way to proceed. The total number of paths is then 2^8, or 256.

well for solving such prob you should always go from smaller version of prob. first construct triangle of two words find no of paths then try it for three words then for four and try to find out relationship between them here in yopur prob
no of words no of paths

4 8
5 16
so the relation comes out to be
no of paths=2^(no of words-1)
here christmas contains 9 words so no of paths willbe
=2^(9-1)
=2^8
=256
