there was no FIFA World Cup being staged in 1996. instead, it was the 1996 UEFA European Championship finals hosted by ENGLAND. GERMANY & CZECH REPUBLIC won the semi-final matches during the tournament against ENGLAND & FRANCE respectively, 1-1 after extra time & 6-5 on penalties.
GERMANY eventually won the 1996 UEFA European Championship final on golden goal against CZECH REPUBLIC. Oliver Bierhoff scored the golden goal to give GERMANY their third European crown after earlier success in 1972 & 1980.
