I have experimented with Gorilla Glue (which isn't as durable as I would like) and an industrial strength epoxy (which is messy, time consuming and stinks to high heaven.) Would a hot glue gun be any better? Would I have better results placing a permanant sticker on the aluminum surface first and then gluing the magnet to the sticker? Please help!

as some one else said scrap/ruff up the area to put the glue a little you can use a nail file.
the best glue i have found for gluing just about any thing is "crafter's goop" you can buy it at most walmarts. it drys clear , drys totally in 24 hrs and is even waterproof once dry

The easy route is double sided tape; this stuff can hold up mirrors if you buy the industrial versions. 3M makes a great series of DST, thick or thin, with a foam center or just for home use. Don't bother with the ones that are removable; they don't hold up as well over time. You can also buy sheets of magnetic paper that already has an adhesive on the back. This also comes in different thicknesses so the thickness you need all depends on what you intend to do with it.

Scratch up both sides to be glued ( I use a dremel with stone attachment), then if you really want it to stick use a two part epoxy (the 5 minute bonding doesn't smell too bad) E6000 is OK... but I've been able to remove things glued to it ( and cold & water can break the bond).
Good luck. ;)

TRY USING A PIECE OF REALLY COARSE SAND PAPER OR A RAZOR BLADE TO SCRATCH UP THE SURFACE OF BOTH THE MAGNET AND THE ALUMINUM BEFORE GLUING, TO GIVE THE GLUE SOMETHING TO BOND TO.

DOn't scratch up the surfaces. Use mirror glue that is used to re-attach rear view mirrors to a windshield.

I have had the best luck with silicone glue like E6000 or Goop.

Use Krazy Glue. Don't stick your fingers together!
