The Hapsburgs (ruling family on the austrian throne) formed the empire in the 1200's and it grew under that family's rule until it's dissolution in 1918.

In 1914, The austro-hungarian empire consisted of some 35 million austrians ruling some 200 million other people from various ethnic groups.
There were Slovenians, Hungarians, Czechs, Slovaks, Poles, Italians, Bosnians, Ruthenians, and smaller minorities of Rumanians and Swiss.

In 1914 Austria was The Austro-Hungarian Empire. In was composed of present day Austria, Hungary, parts of Poland, Czech Rep.,Slovakia, and significant portions of various Balkan countries. The emperor was of the Hapsburg dynasty.
