what is the meaning of the term "door prizes"?

I know that a door prize is something you get at a party or conference but where did the term come from and what does it mean?

It is a prize that you have a chance to win for simply having come in the door. Any attendee might win it.

It comes from a prize being won at the door as you walk in the door, hence the term DOOR PRIZE!
