I recently completed my first Anthology of Poetry called Emotions and I was wondering if anyone knew the next steps of possibly getting published? Which publishing houses or literary agencies that accept poetry? Also any information I need to know about getting published.

I haven't read your poems, but I see a couple of problems here.

Unless you pay them to, no one is going to publish a book of your poems. I, too, am a writer and the hardest thing for us to remember is that for the publisher, it is a business, not an art. Poetry is one of the least popular forms of literature today, after all, it's hard to make a movie or design an action figure from a poem.

What you are going to do is convince a publisher that your poems are worth the expense of publishing. I think the best way for you to do that is to send individual poems to good magazines, such as Atlantic, New Yorker, Harpers, as well as academic publications. Look in the Writer's Market for addresses and other markets.

After publishing several of your poems, you might be able to publish a volume, but it will take lots of work and probably lots of time.

I wish you lots of luck and inspiration.

They are right to say that you really should try out magazines and such. But also, think of any poetry books you might have read or own that publish new writers. Some small publishing houses have a very strategic vision of the types of works they are interesting in publishing, so if you fall into their realm of expertise you have a better chance.

I've known a couple of people that have worked in publishing that say they get scripts and works that have nothing to do with their profile as a publishing house. They expect a writer that wants to publish to also be an avid reader that knows which publishers and collections he feels an affinity to. So if you own or have read any recent works you like and can identify with, you should try sending it to them (the publishers) or go to the library or bookstore and browse to get ideas.

And if you have to pay for publishing... not good. That's considered to be vanity press (there's an article about that on wikipedia if you're interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanity_press)

Hope it helps, and good luck!

An anthology, from "a garland of flowers" in Greek, is usually a collection of numerous poets, or the best works of an individual poet of some renown. Perhaps you could call it a collection, or use the term "miscellany" which is applied to collections of writings of an individuals or a group.

In any event, you need to find or buy a copy of Poet's Market, and start submitting to the publishers, magazines, and agents found there.

Or, go to Poets & Writers at: http://www.pw.org/ and look up there submissions info (this is one of the best resources available).

Good Luck.

You can try poetry.com, that's where I published one of my poems. However, i feel that it may not be that great of a choice because it requires a priced membership and when they do publish your work they'll probably ask you to buy the book that they published your work in. This was simply a suggestion, but you should definitely check out the website, they may have changed; i haven't been on there in a while, so I'm not too sure.

verify author's Markets - that's on your close by library - and there are listings there for various publishers, which incorporate publishers who shield poetry. even with the undeniable fact that that's an extremely no longer ordinary industry to get into.
