A psychologist is a scientist and/or clinician who studies psychology, the systematic investigation of the human mind, including behavior and cognition. Psychologists are usually categorized under a number of different fields, the most well-recognized being clinical psychologists, who provide mental health care, and research psychologists, who collect information on people's minds.

Psychotherapy is a range of techniques based on dialogue, communication and behavior change and which are designed to improve the mental health of a client or patient, or to improve group relationships (such as in a family). Most forms of psychotherapy use only spoken conversation, though some also use various other forms of communication such as the written word, artwork or touch. Commonly psychotherapy involves a therapist and client(s) — and in family therapy several family members or even other members from their social network — who discuss their issues in an effort to discover underlying problems and to find constructive solutions.

Therapy may address specific forms of diagnosable mental illness, or everyday problems in relationships or meeting personal goals. Treatment of everyday problems is more often referred to as counseling (a distinction originally adopted by Carl Rogers) but the term is sometimes used interchangeably with "psychotherapy".

Psychotherapeutic interventions are often designed to treat the patient in the medical model, although not all psychotherapeutic approaches follow the model of "illness/cure". Some practitioners, such as humanistic schools, see themselves in an educational or helper role. Because sensitive topics are often discussed during psychotherapy, therapists are expected, and usually legally bound, to respect client or patient confidentiality.

Some of the previous answers are not accurate... at least not for the state of NC and many other states. A psychologist does not prescribe medications; a psychiatrist is the one that prescribes medications. You do not have to have a doctorate in psychology to be a psychologist, you can have a masters degree but then must be supervised by someone with a Doctorate to practice. And finally there are regulations and licensure for therapists in the mental health field requiring a minimum of a Masters degree plus accreditation or acceptance of your Masters program by the state licensure board.

A psychologist can do psychological testing officially that a therapist can not do... both can provide therapy but most psychologists do not practice as therapist or only as therapist based on my 10 years experience in the mental health field.

In the field of psychology, a therapist is any person with a degree in psychology who is trained to counsel people. Most counselors that see individuals for therapy are at a master's level.
A psychologist is a counselor who has a PhD in psychology. I am pretty sure they can not prescribe medication. A psychiatrist has to do it because they are trained in psychology and medicine.
You need to be an MD to prescribe medication. A person with a PhD (in any field of study) can be addressed as "Dr. whatever" which really adds to the confusion. If you want to know if someone is a medical doctor, look for the MD in their title.

A therapist is a general term for someone who offers any kind of therapy. It could be physical, massage, mental health--any kind of therapist.

A psychologist is a specific kind of therapist. This person has a PhD in psychology, CANNOT prescribe medicine, can administer psychological assessments and work as a therapist. Someone with a masters in social work or psychology can also function as a mental health therapist. A psychiatrist is a medial doctor. S/he is the only one who can prescribe medications due to his/her medical degree.

The word psychologist is specific to someone who has a doctorate degree and a license in psychology (the term is "governed" by psychologist licensing boards). The word therapist isn't governed, so there are no degree requirments to call oneself a therapist (although some individuals with advanced degrees do call themselves therapists). Psychologists cannot prescribe medicine in most states (Psychiatrists prescribe medicine). In some states psychologists are seeking the opportunity to prescribe medicine.
