It means to use creativity in devising an innovative and original solution.

I hate the phrase outside the box. Its whole purpose is to spur originality, yet it's an overused cliche. Perhaps someone who invokes the cliche should mind his own advice and come up with an original, less-tired saying.

It's an expression that means to consider something beyond what's obvious, or at face value. In other words, say someone tells you something that you can't quite believe. So you look "outside the box" to see if there isn't an underlying fact to either confirm or deny what the person is telling you.
