It teaches you work ethic in spite of your lack-of-desire to complete it...

it can really help you understand whatever it is you're discussing in class. it makes you think about it for yourself, as opposed to just being fed information.

it gives your teacher a chance to get to know who you are THROUGH your work. Remember, your work says a lot about who you are.

Hope this helps =) Happy holidays!

Homework is supposed to reinforce lecture material as was mentioned above. More and more studies, however, are showing that a burdensome amount of homework is useless or even harmful to students. Anything assigned that takes the student past about 30 mins per day is apparently pointless in terms of reinforcement. Kids don't have the time to do all their work these days so all the extra homework that teachers are handing out in order to prepare their students for college is just making teens lose sleep.

For some decent info read The Overachievers by A. Robbins. Very good book.

Homework plays an important role in a child's education. It is not simply busy-work assigned to children to keep them occupied at home. Homework and studying serve several educational needs that are essential to a complete education. They provide an opportunity for children to develop self-discipline, study habits, and time management skills. Children can set homework goals and enjoy a feeling of accomplishment when the goals are met. Children learn how to be independent and responsible. They practice taking initiative by starting on projects and studying when necessary. Homework also closes the gap between school and home. Learning should happen at home as well.

Well when my son was in high school and failing his classes the teachers explained it to me like this. They said homework was assigned to reinforce the lectures and discussions in class. That is what prepared students for the tests......only my son was getting a 130% on the tests and failing the class because he wasn't doing the homework.....but obviously he didn't need the reinforcement. Now do you see the purpose of homework?

Homework teaches you to work independently, which we all have to do in the work force. It shows that you can apply yourself to the task at hand and most importantly you are educating yourself on your own time. If you didn't do homework you wouldn't really learn as much as you do everyday. Distractions in the classroom can cause you to miss what ever it is the teacher is teaching at that time , when you do the homework on what was taught that day you pick up what you missed.

Just the fact that students do homework proves that they are responsible. It improves responsibility.
