I'm 20, too, and I still enjoy watching the Disney Channel, but I really don't care for High School Musical. My eight-year-old sister loves it, but I don't see what the big deal is either. The only thing that sets it apart from other Disney movies is that it's a complete musical that consists of only kids/teens, pretty much. I don't know, I think my little sister just likes it because she likes to sing and dance, and she thinks Vanessa and Ashley are pretty. I think it's a pretty lame movie, though. I remember that Luck of the Irish movie. That was the one where the kid who plays basketball finds out his mom's a leprechaun, so he's part leprechaun, too, right?

I'm 19 and love Disney..............I really liked High School Musical, but I don't know what all the hype was about. There was so much talk in magazines and everything before it came out. I don't remember any other Disney special having that much attention. One of my faves was Brink, and I really liked Model Behavior and Smart House. The kid that played in it also played in Luck of the Irish. So if HSM was about the actors pursuing careers why didn't they make all that hype about one of those. ?????

Its very popular for one reason, demographics. Its like any product if it is marketed to right group correctly it will be popular.
In this case the target age is pre-teens, who nagged their parents to purchase it. It was marketed heavily at Christmas last year and this year and in between word of mouth among young kids kept the HSM popular far longer than its quality would otherwise allow.
Its an entertainment equivalent of a Tickle Me Elmo, its not the best of its kind, it just was advertised correctly to the right people (kids).

It did so well because people looked at it as the modern day "Grease" Older people enjoyed that, and younger people enjoyed the singing and dancing. I thought it was ok, but others thought it was the best thing since sliced bread.
Everyone has their own opinion. Anyway, Happy Holidays everyone! :)
