Alex is a solid QB with young weapons around him in Antonio Bryant , Frank Gore, and Vernon Davis. If this core can stay healthy and grow year to year Alex will do well.
Unfortunately The 49ers defense is a huge mess and needs serious restructuring.

Alex Smith is a prime example that the 49ers ownership and coaches know absolutely nothing about judging talent.

Smith is a player that is improving. not to a great caliber QB yet, but he has potential. i think we should stick with Alex because he's been learning the west coast offense, then changed and now is learning a vertical passing scheme all of a sudden, which would prove to be very detrimental to most young QBs but Smith has actually improved since then. he needs to work on alot of mistakes, but lots of great QBs have gone through it. he's sort of like a poject player, in which we are trying to build him up into a good QB. he's not in Vick's shoes yet where he's been in the league for 6 years and hit his prime.

Yes, although he has gone through times of struggle (as do many of the greats; Elway, Manning, etc.), he is the best guy for the niners to build around (besides of course frank gore). If they can get him a big name reciever in the draft like Ted Ginn, or Jeff Smardzja, and get a good offensive line around him, he should be a decent quarterback through time. Just remember, it will be tought to ever replace Steve Young and Joe Montana.

I think Alex Smith is going to work out very well for y'all. Just make sure you hold onto Norv Turner as your offensive coordinator. He's good at molding young QBs.

I do not think he is the future of the franchise but i think until he proves he is not worthy of being there QB theyll stick with him but the future is with Frank Gore.

Not time to give up on him just yet. He could still become a good QB in this league, you just have to tough it out. I'd say if he hasn't gotten by the end of next year, it's probably time to pull the plug...
