Which one do you prefer? I'm all for shelters, instead of mass-breeding pets for profit.

Shelters by all means. We all know what happens to shelter animals after the short time they are there, and do not get adopted. They all deserve a second chance.

It's hard to fine good quality purebreds in shelters, but if you want a loving pet who needs a second chance at life, they're perfect.
Breeders are best when you have your heart set on a specific breed or you want a dog to show or breed. (Not that I reccomend breeding animals at all, the pet world is already grossly overpopulated.)
It's important to find a good breeder who cares about temperment and conformation, not just about making a profit. Breeders should be more than willing to let you interact with the entire litter of puppies to see which one you click with. They should also be willing to let you meet the parents and provide papers as well as vet records.
Never trust a breeder who wants to meet you some place to show you one lonely puppy. They want you to feel bad for it so you'll buy it, and those tactics are often used by puppy mills, which are thankfully illegal.

Shelters for sure. Both of my animals. Dog and Cat came from a shelter. They are beautiful.(even thought they aren't "pure breeds"). Call your local shelter. Good Luck

If just adopted a puppy 3 weeks ago....what a great decision that was, she is absolutely wonderful. I would recommend checking out your local shelters before you purchase anything from a breeder - if you can't find anything you like after a few visits then go with a breeder.

definately shelters. i read a book by Randy Grimm of Stray Rescue of St . Louis. And I made a promise to myself that I would never buy from a breeder again. Read it.

Shelters. I'd never pay for an animal, there are far too many out there that need to be adopted and will othewise be euthanised if they are not.
