I'm now 17, but I received my period very early when I was about 9 or 10. At the beginning I was very scared but I did know how to handle it because I was taught about it at an early age. You'll experience a little cramping at times and generally the average flow lasts about 4-7 days. Mine lasts for 5 days, the beginning is very heavy, and after day 3 it is fairly light. You should always keep track of your period by using a calendar, marking every 4 weeks from the time you started menustrating. On the week that you're supposed to start, according to the calendar, wear some tissue or a panty liner so that it doesn't show up unexpectantly. Although it can be tough at times, it's something that every woman has to experience. Good blessings!

Well im 18 and Periods for me totally SUCK!!! I didnt get my cycle until i was almost 14. I kept wishing it would finally come, then when it actually came i wished i had more time without it. The first couple of days are the worst! I know that my period is coming because i have cramps b4 it happens. But when it finally does come i have cramps the first day and the next 2 or 3 days is a heavy flow, but after that it calms down. I have a cycle for 5 - 6 days. Some can be shorter some can be longer. Each person is different. Just remember to always be prepared if you feel like it may be coming soon be sure to protect yourself from embarresment by having some type of panty liner or something.

How does your mom know? Every woman is different. My mom started when she was 12, and I started when I was 15. Don't be in a hurry to get it because it's really a pain!
Every woman's cycle varies a little. Mine is still somewhat irregular after 7 years, but I get mine every 24-28 days. I get some lower back pain the first 2 days. . . no big deal.
You can start out with pads (I would start carrying them with you now) if you want but you might want to switch to tampons later. They are comfortable, easy to use and (contrary to what ThereseRose wrote) will not give you bacterial infections as long as you remember to change them often. Also you will feel much more hygienic; I've found that pads tend to cause an unpleasant odor.

Don't be scared. The other answer was from a guy so they don't really know. It's different for everyone. It is uncomfortable because of the cramps, but take Tylenol, Midol, etc. and use a heating pad if they get too uncomfortable. The heat helps the blood travel easier. Do not use tampons. Even though they are convenient, they can cause bacterial infections, etc. The new pads out now are fine to use. But do not have sex during your period because you can get pregnant easier during that time. But you are far too young to be having sex anyway.

You usasally have your period about the time when your mom did or about the same age.
When I was 12 they didn't talk about it. I just happen to get hit with a ball in the stomach in PE and when I went in to change clothes my pants were full of blood thought I was bleeding to death. So they sent me home from school I had a lot of pain with mine but that doesn't mean you will.
If you were my daughter
I would tell you to be carrying a little Kotex and a change of underware in a purse and an extra pair of pants .in a bag leave them at school. you only need it once a month and extra kotex at school. Its only 30 days apart till next period..
Enjoy it why you don't have your period its quite messy.

Just always be perpared. Carry pads in your purse at school just in case you start and t there is a staing tie a jacket around your waist or if it is long enough just wear it so it covers your butt. Don't drink caffine it makes cramps (for me) horrible. And take a medicine you usually take for a headache that morning so you don't get cramps. Good Luck. And have a Happy period.
