Things have changed for everyone over the last few years. I am a department manager and head technician in a large dental laboratory. I make a good living with a decent salary. Up until last year, all managers in the lab were given a full weeks pay as their holiday bonus ... nice! Last year, everyone in the lab, EVERYONE, got a $50.00 bill in a card thanking us for our dedication! This year, nobody got anything. Instead, they had a catered lunch for all of us in the lunch room ... Oh well!
Stuff like that makes me think about my commitment to my employer. While the managers in the lab make much more than the hourly workers to start with, we also commit for a minimum of 50 hours a week instead of the usual 40, and we'll do more time if need be. By the time you factor in the additional hours we do on a regular basis, we sometimes we make less than an hourly worker does pulling overtime! On the other hand, I don't get any flack for taking more time than I'm actually entitled to for vacation and I get paid for it. I also get paid if I don't use all of my vacation time. I'm entitled to 4 weeks now, so if I only use 2 of them, after the new year rolls over, I'll get paid for the 2 unused weeks from the previous year! So everything balances out in the long run!

I guess you should be grateful you are getting something rather than nothing but a turkey isn't a great gift, especially when you have to go pick it up. You can't look a gift horse in the mouth.
Instead of feeling crappy about the crappy gift, turn it into something positive. Donate it to a food bank. I'm sure you would feel better about the 20 minute drive knowing it was going to someone who is in need.

I have worked for a multi-billion dollar corporation for nearly 6 years. I have never received a holiday bonus of any kind from this company. Frankly, I don't think them cheap at all. They have nearly 15,000 employees nationwide that they have to pay each week. Count it a blessing that your doctor did that much for you. He or she did not have to do that for you at all. I am assuming that your employer was trying to be kind and gracious because of the season.

Yes! He is a cheap bastard! I have been in situations like this myself. If he is this cheap at Christmas time, I would bet that he is cheap when it is time for a raise as well. How are your health benefits? I'll bet that he is cheap here also. Does he tell you how good you have it with him? How hard it is to find a job? How low other docs pay? I'll bet he does! And, you know what? He is a liar! Look for another job with a good Doc. You have the experience.
Go for it!

I'd politely refuse the so-called "bonus". Uber-cheap. The time and gas money you'd spend having to go get the bonus makes it a useless endeavor. I feel for ya... but yeah well, there are other things about holidays to look forward to.

I agree that you should tell him you are not going to pick it up because you do not have a place to store it and your family does not eat turkey. Maybe next year, he will remember what an inconvenience it was and go back to a money bonus. It is really cheap because you can get turkeys for under $10 each and less if you buy a lot of them. It's not like he doesn't have the money. I would be so mad. Act chilly for a few weeks and he will get the message.

Most definately. I think that unless you told himt hat you were big on turkey that is callous of him to assume that you even eat turkey, or would want to have a whole bird for the holiday..to wash, prepare cook and serve. Some turkeys can cost an arm and a leg but in this case, I think your doctor can be diagnosed with cheapness!

Christmas bonus? What's that?
Hey, if it's a big hassle, give your certificate to someone who can use it or give it to a charity in your area. Then maybe you'll at least get some good feeling out of giving instead of receiving.
