not to mention the annoying carols playing in the shops

We have had every single Year 5 class on the Coast come into our shopping mall and sing carols, this week

Why? Why? Why?

And if I ever have to listen to Six White Boomers again, I'm going to slice off my ears!

Humbug!

(Actually, I do like Christmas, just not the lead up to it and the schmaltz)

Opinions vary. I happen to agree with you. I feel less is more. To the eye, anyway. Less cluttered and claustrophobic. Less - dare I say, Victorian. We have a two-foot artificial tree (So what do we know? Just kidding!) and I have taken a string of small multi-coloured lights numbering about one hundred and wrapped each branch around and around, up and down the tree, and that's it. Decoration complete. But here's the good part: you cannot see those lights when you just glance at that little tree when you come into our living room, but when you click it on, it comes to life with all these beautiful little coloured lights, and it is absolutely magnificent. Charlie Brown in size (USA cartoon series), but like the Rockefeller Center tree when lighted. There is enough illumination coming from it to light up our living room. But it is hardly "over the top." This has been our point of compromise as to how much we will do as older folks for Christmas each year. That little tree sits comfortably atop a small table with a Christmas motif tablecloth. You wouldn't think something so simple could be so elegant, but it is. Our Christmas theme this year is "A Simple Christmas." We used to decorate a seven-foot real tree every year, and we had something like fourteen boxes (count them!) of baubles, balls, lights, tinsel, doo-dahs and so forth. I just got weary of all the details and decided to make a quiet, simple but vibrant statement for Christmas, and the two-foot tree with all the lights was born. It works. Merry Christmas to you and yours, and I hope my reply sheds some light (ha ha) on your fine question. From Chris in South Portland, Maine, U.S.A. I am 64 and my partner is 86. We sit in the evenings about fifteen feet from that little tree and just enjoy the glow coming from it. That is our Christmas - what we are feeling in our hearts, not all the doo-dahs we have done decorating every square inch of our surroundings.

Yeah. Christmas has been so commercialized that it's not fun anymore. Yes, I enjoy the holiday break and that everyone has a sunny disposition, but I could do with out the trees and decorations. In fact, I haven't decorated for Christmas for like four years.

Can't say the same for the songs though. I love the songs, no matter how cheesy they are.

I'm not a Grinch, but I get annoyed by all the business, that goes on during the holidays, here's a list of thing's that frustrates me during the holidays.

The traffic
The crowdiness
The long checkout lines in the stores
The impatience that some people have
The nastiness that the holidays bring out in people (fighting over certain limited items)

I feel like that sometimes, but I try to get over it because my poor attitude is a drag for me and for the ones I am with. Christmas is stressful with all of the pressures it brings, but I try and remember it really is a time to enjoy time with family and friends. I know it sounds corny, but it works for me. Hope you have a happy holiday.

Man, i've been a Grinch all year. I think its because Christmas is so commercialized and shoved down our throats by the media and radio it makes me sick!
