I had the distributer cap and spark plugs replaced, had a map sensor, and a couple of other things done, but that wasn't the problem. I thought it might be the fuel pump, but I had the mechanic check it. he said it's fine. I know its not the battery.

I take it that shutting off means stalling out and shaking a lot means misfiring. If this is correct, then yes this can be the trouble if we are talking about an intake manifold gasket leaking air into the intake stream without being monitored or controlled. Generally, these things can be detected by spraying an aerosol fluid that has a low flammability around the intake area. If the fluid finds its way into the combustion portion of the motor, the way the motor runs should alter. I am unsure about your problem though!! Usually when an intake manifold is leaking vacuum there is also a complaint of a high idle, especially when cold and I don't see that complaint here. Stalling and misfiring motors can be simply a bad spark plug, plug wire, or any other component leading to one or another cylinder. More diagnosis would be required to be sure of the problem here before dis-assembly!!

have you sprayed starting fluid around manifold gasket to check for leaks ? if it is leaking it will cause problems, but the biggest thing that causes what you're describing is either the spark plugs need changed and or plug wires, distributor cap and rotor. in other words probably just needs a tune up
