My cousin has asked me to write her autobiography, I told her I would but that we may have to change some of her past lover's names.

They can only sue if you lie about them & defame them in some way. You can always change their names & keep the events accurate.

If you can't get written permission then change the names and add a disclaimer at beginning of book

have her past lover's sign their name in a notarized form that they might be included in book about her life. Therefore, they will not be able to sue her, also include that their sexual intimacy might be in it, so they wont be able to sue for for Defamation of Character, incase she states diferrent.
