I have a 99 Ford Taurus 3.8 l and my hubby says follow the waterhose away from the radiator towards the motor.
Says you will find a half moon looking thing with 3 bolts.
Take the 3 bolts off and there it should be.
Hope this helps.

It is either at the end of the top or bottom radiator hose that connects to the engine. It's been 8 years since I had to deal with that beast, so I don't exactly recall.

I hate to be the possible bearer of bad news, but the 3.8 liter engine in that year range was very susceptible to bad head gaskets. There was even an extended warranty put on them.

I had a '94 that started overheating, caused by front head gasket.
Lose that car as soon as possible. Have you had to replace the transmission yet? If not, it will be soon.

HI follow the top radiator hose to the motor that is where the thermostat is located. Its NOT in the hose you well have to remove the housing that the hose is connected to to replace the thermostat. Be sure to remove all the old gasket from both sides (housing and motor ) and install a new one. there should be a lip that the thermostat sits in so it well stay centered. be carefully not to let it slip as if it does you can brake the housing it sits in. good luck tim
