Playbill magazine is the NYC publication that serves as programs for most shows in the city. It includes the cast list for the particular production, along with biographies, restaurant listings, and some more general articles about theater in the City. By and large it caters to the more commercial end of the biz, so you won't find much off- or off-off-Broadway stuff here. Oh, and PS, the Disney shows (Mary Poppins, The Lion King, and so on), don't use Playbill, but have their own version called, unimaginatively, Stagebill.

a playbill is the guide to the play. It has character lists, actor and actress bios, scene guides, and then hundreds of useless ads. basically it helps you to follow the play and learn about those who are in it.
