Whatever he likes. The only thing you can do is to cater to his feelings.

The first thing that comes to mind is something to help him with his inevitable phone bill--if he has a cell phone that is pay-as-you-go, get him some extra minutes. If he drives to see you, a gas card would be great.
Brookstone has a photo keychain--load it with pictures of you and he together. The digital image changes--an entire album on a keychain. It costs $50.
Is he a long-distance runner? If so, think about getting him some packets of Power Gel. It's nasty stuff, but it's also really useful for runners and is expensive, especially if he uses a lot of it.
A Swiss Army knife keychain with a flash drive will be useful now and when he goes to college. STarting at $50, the knives come with a USB flash drive so your boyfriend can transfer files (like papers and music) from one computer to another. VERY useful if he's working on different computers at school or at home (or your dorm!) and especially useful if he wants to back up stuff, like college essays or pictures of you!

My husband and I dated long-distance for 3.5 years. One valentine's day, I wanted to give him something classy and old-timey, so I gave him a sepia-toned picture of us in a frame, an antique looking desk clock (he loves clocks -- you could possibly do a pocket watch instead?) and the movie Casablanca, which we watched together that night. If your man's not into the old-time kind of things, you could do something similar with a romantic movie, pictures, etc... Good luck, and I know long distance relationships are hard, but worth it!! We just got married 3 weeks ago and getting to see each other everyday makes the wait SO worth while! Hang in there!

Phone card or minutes for his cell phone would work, that way he would always be able to call you. Or a plane ticket to come see you. Or to just show up for Christmas.

If you can't afford a visit, give him something that will remind him of you every day. Or a picture of you two that he loves. I'd Go with some sort of candy.
