Why does microsoft care if people use their browser? They don't have ads in it or anything, and its free so why do they care if people switch to Firefox?

to make a long story short. there is(was) a lot of source code shared between the Microsoft operating system and Microsoft Internet Explorer. When the Internet started getting big in the early to mid 90's. a lot of these flaws were exploited by many bored hackers. This is why Windows used to have a lot of security problems. This is when Linux Red Hat came out and started to grow and evolved and a lot of people started going back to more Unix based operating systems.

There are no two ways about it, they are better designed and more secure. They both have good and bad points. I was doing some software testing for MS back then. It didn't sway me to go back to a Unix based OS at home but I do use firefox..lol

That is basically what happened in a nutshell.

Part of the browser wars arises from dominance of standards. Imagine if you could control whether the *entire* world spoke in English or in Italian. That's a huge amount of power for native speakers for either language, right? I mean, to have everyone forced to use and work with your language. It gives you power.

That's kind of the idea behind Firefox vs IE. IE is Microsoft, and they want to push their standards. Firefox pushes for international standards like W3 HTML, CSS, etc. And they keep fighting because whoever wins changes how web design and the web works.
