Dr. is a term of respcect and also signifies that this person is knowledgable in whatever area they are a doctor of. To call someone Mr. is only to identify them as a male. To call someone Dr. shows that they have the education to deserve that distinction.

A DR. is a male or female that has acquired that high level of education, ie MD, ED, etc

An MR is an adult male, sometimes used on younger people to invoke more mature behavior.

you can only call some one Dr. if they have a PhD or a doctorate. its a matter of being polite and recognizing their accomplishment.
