Well if we look at the heart it self it pumps blood all over your body with out it you wouldn't survive your key existence relys on it. just like love it controls you saying to people "I love you with all my heart" would be the equivalent to saying "you are my everything"..and when people say "you broke my heart ?you have crushed their world and existence doesn't matter at that point..just my take on it

There's no doubt that the feelings of love (like all feelings) originate in the brain, however, much of the physical manifestations of love are strongly linked to a cardiac response. From the "butterflies in your stomach" palpitations when you first approach a potential partner to the racing pulse that accompanies lovemaking, the heart becomes more noticeable at nearly every stage of passionate love. I think people took note of all this and assumed that the heart was the source of the feeling rather than a physiological reaction to it.
As for the traditional "Valentine's day" heart, I think it's worth noting that it bears more than a passing resemblance to the female breasts, buttocks, and pubic region. And think how often it's depicted with an arrow sticking into it (hmm, what could THAT symbolize??)... :)

Love, attraction, etc. . . was originally to populate the earth. It is a feeling about another person to create a family and continue to give us a desire to have a family to depend on. It is not to be confused with infatuation. Love and infatuation both cause much emotion. The secret is in finding the difference between the two. Love, real love, lasts through age, loss of physical appearance, etc . . . It comes from the heart. Infatuation doesn't last, but it seems the same at the start. We all desire love. and sometimes we try to believe that infatuation is love. Infatuation always fades with time. The heart is always capable of love.

O.k., you're on!...I will riddle ya that.
How about, doesn't the heart beat faster when you see the sight of someone you really love?
Or at least think you do. Could be lust. But we don't know that while it's happenin' most of the time.
In other countries, at various times, other organs have been symbolized for this purpose. Just about many, if not all, anyway.
The stomach, the liver, the spleen,...each in turn has served that purpose.
Now can you picture someone sayin', I love you from the pit of my stomach! My stomach growls for you!
Whatever works for ya, I guess!

I've wondered that myself actually.
And I have a theory: when someone falls in love, there's a physical reaction that accelerates heartbeat and breathing and can be felt in the chest. Also, when someone is heartbroken, there tends to be a tightening feeling in the chest. Since the heart is in the chest, it stands to reason that the "love" that causes these reactions started in the heart.
Of course, using my theory, it could also be reasonable to say that "love" comes from the lungs. But since the heart is considered to be a more vital organ than the lungs, I still go with the heart.

Love is a conscious, mental thing? No way. Love is mainly emotional and instinctual. Love is a feeling. When you're around someone you love, your heart beats faster. Maybe you're thinking about agape or platonic love. When they talk about love and the heart, we mean eros - desire.
Another clue: When the ancients referred to the "heart" a literal, more accurate translation is "gut" or "bowels", as in "I have a gut feeling", or "I feel it in my gut." But we don't think like that anymore, so modern's change the translation to heart. Look further into that, and you might find more answers. I always meant to look further into that.

Ancient people did not know the function of the brain. They assumed that because the heart was the only internal organ that could be detected from outside the body that it was the center of consciousness.

I would think that the heart became associated with love because when love is over you feel like your heart is in your stomach. And when love is over you wish your heart would stop beating so you could just die.
