Can someone explain Skype for me? (functions, cost, how it works...)?

Skype is a free combination instant message/VOIP (voice over IP) client.

I believe it was more popular in Europe until recently.

It allows you to use your phone to call others over the internet and internet users to call you on the phone.

Skype is a phone company. They use the internet to send your voice from your computer to whoever you want.

If you want to call somebody else who has Skype on their computer, then you can call them for free anytime, no matter where they live. If you want to call somebody, but they don't have Skype, it costs money because Skype has to connect to other phone providers to complete the call, and those phone providers charge Skype whenever they have to do that. But Skype doesn't charge you a lot for it. In fact, right now they only charge $15 per YEAR for unlimited calls anywhere anytime in the U.S. or Canada. It's called SkypeOut. To use Skype, you download the free program. You can use your existing microphone and speakers, or headset to to talk and hear people. There's also Skype phones for sale, for about 30 - 40 dollars that connect to your computer, and work just like a regular phone. You just dial the number on those to use it, you don't have to punch it in the computer, or use a headset to talk. That phone plugs in by a wire though. They have cordless phones too, but they're more expensive.

Skype is just like any other phone company where they connect you to someone else so you can talk back and forth. They can offer it for free or cheap because it doesn't cost a lot to send voice data over the internet.

Its communication software. You need a mic to get the best out of the software. You can call any friends who have skype for free, or u can call landlines/mobiles for relatively cheap prices. Most landlines cost under a penny a minute (not sure what dollar prices are) .. cheaper than most landlines anyway.

You can do video conversations and voice conferencing with a group of people.

Also includes an instant messanger so u can type to friends who are online.

You can also call them for free(just like yahoo messenger or google talk). However, if you want to call regular phones, then you need to buy credit. You can also buy a number, so that people can call you using regular phones. you will receive the calls on your computer. You can also buy voicemail service(its free if you buy a number).
