Do you want to return to the restuarant? If so, pay, or drop the money on the table. One of my cousins is a volunteer fireman/ambulance driver in his small town. He has gotten called away from his lunch break so often it is a joke at the local diner. He always offers to pay, and they tell him not to worry, they'll charge him after he has it.

At the time you ordered service, you made a verbal contract with the restaurant. They committed to provide a product, and you committed to pay for it. You have to pay, and you can either drink it, take it with you, or leave it there. The same would apply to a meal or any other commodity. In the case of food, the restaurant suffers a loss because they cannot re-stock the food and re-sell it, so they could sue you for damages if you refused to pay.

In a store, if you start to buy a TV, and then decide not to, the store can do little about it. They still have the product in their possession, so they can take it back to mitigate their loss. They could still argue that they were unable to sell the TV to someone else, so lost money when you backed out of the contract; but in practice this is highly unlikely. However, you've seen stores who are off-loading old merchanise in a sale with signs saying 'all sale items are final' - there they are covering themselves against that type of loss, where the goods would no longer be worth selling if you decide you don't want them.

Well, several things come out from your question.

First, you ordered it, and an employee makes an effort to serve you, taking their paid time to enter your order, prepare your coffee, use whatever cup to serve it, you have cost them money to this point. PAY UP. That is why some places you pay first, anyway.

Second, I'm glad this kept you thinking. I would hate the thought of what would have happened if you stopped!

Third, think of a vending machine. You drop in your money, get your drink, at this point who cares if you drink it or dump it? You made a conscious choice to order it, pay for it!

Guess what? The person behind the counter has to pay for it in some cases. We had a guy do that a couple times and we got approval from the owner not to serve him again.
He wasn't an ambulance/firefighter/police officer
Just a cellphone talking jerk.

I think you are obligated to at least inform the waiter/waitress that you need to cancel the order. You may be obligated to pay for the coffee since you ordered it, however I wouldn't hold up my response to the emergency any longer than necessary to flag someone down to pay up.

Yes because you made a contract to purchase the coffee.

It is not relevant whether you used the coffee, the mere fact that you ordered it is enough to pay for it.

In most states you are legally obligated to pay for it if you don't cancel your order. Generally, all you have to do is tell the waitperson or host/hostess to cancel your order. If you don't do that, you may have to pay. It depends on the state/city it occurs in.

sometime there have been 2 blondes engaged on a roadside park, one became digging a hollow and the different one became filling it in, many human beings have been very amused by this and finally one guy went as much as between the blondes and reported, "wow, all human beings are inspired by your artwork, yet what are you doing?" So the blonde reported to him, " nicely we are planting timber however the guy who does it is absent at present." yet another one: it is the cleanest blnode comedian tale you will ever hear. a blonde went to the airport and offered a third type cost ticket to texas, yet while she have been given on th airplane, she plopped suited down in 1st type, so the guy who exams your cost ticket got here to visit and reported to her, "ma'am you have a third type cost ticket, you could circulate to the returned of the airplane." The blonde says"i'm blonde, i'm alluring and that i pass to texas" So he went as much as the piolit and reported for them to no longer take off yet, so the piolit says" carry on i'm married to a blonde" so he is going and whispers something into the blondes' ear and she or he strikes suited away, so they ask him,"what did you tell her?" the piolit says,"i advised her the front of the airplane wasn't going to texas" oh and Britney Spears now this could be a humorous blonde comedian tale!!!

If you were in that big of a rush...it would have only taken you a minute to throw a couple bucks on the table as a good gesture!
