How do you know it is a virus to start with? You may not have enough ram memory to support the program. Back to the virus, if you can run a virus scanner and find out which virus you can have someone download the patch for you and install it.

Download this free anti-virus app here : http://www.free-av.com and run a scan. You will still need a anti-virus app but as fas as IE closed by itself, i don't think it's a virus that caused that. A virus or spyware would want your internet connection to open all the time to spread the the infection around, not close it. Your problem could relate to your video card or bad RAM. First download the latest DirectX from Microsoft, install the latest driver from your video card manufacturer (most likely Nvidia or ATI) to see if it fix the problem. If it does not you need to check the RAM for defects. Open your case and take out the RAM in one slot and run run IE. If it does not close then you know the RAM chip you took out is bad.....and so on. It's a process of elimination. There are more ways to troubleshoot your problem but i don't want to bore you :-)

Internet Explorer closing on its own does not always mean you are infected. The most common reason for this is oudated video drivers. Go to your Computer or Video card manufacturer and check for updated drivers. If new drivers are not available then download the original driver again. It might have become corrupted.

Here is a work around that might help.

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2. On the left side click the Display Classic View, Click Display Icon, click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced.

3. Click the Performance or Troubleshooting tab (depending on your operating system), and then reduce hardware acceleration a notch at a time until your system stabilizes.

Get a Mac.........

Anyways, don't try to get one of those free antivirus programs because they all come with their own viruses. First you should see if anybody you know has antivirus software you could trust, like Norton or something, and use that.
If all else fails, you should disconnect the computer from the internet and/or local area network to prevent the virus from spreading. Then burn only the stuff you need onto discs, wipe the hard drive, then re-install windows. Or search for a more secure operating system that you can install on your computer... I think Linux is pretty secure.

Try doing some virus and spyware scans. There's a list of free
antivirus and antispyware here. http://www.basicspywaretips.com
In the future use the Firefox browser instead, much more secure.

McAfee has a freeware virus and trojan horse removal program. It is called Stinger. The current version is 2.60. You can find it with a Google search or from http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ . You can also look for and download the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool from http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx .
