Well... nazism fell because the nazis pitted themselves against some of the world's strongest nations in WWII, and the war effort (coupled with extremely harsh imperialist and racist ambitions) exhausted them and pushed them into virtual extinction. So in effect, the nazi empire fell as a direct result of WWII.

The soviets fell because their economic system proved unviable when compared to the western capitalist model. Also, after a lot of ups and downs in the Cold War, Ronnie Reagan in the US took a really strong stance to scare the soviets off by renewing the arms race, knowing he could outspend the soviets. This, combined with gorbachev's policies of glasnost and perestroika (which made the common people demand more freedoms as more were given to them), toppled the soviet union.

Of course, there's the huge issue of human rights and civil liberties, but there are also big economic factors behind this as well.

Nazism in the immediate sense fell because of the Axis defeat in WW2. Communism ultimately failed because a centrally-planned economy leads to hyperinflation, break-queues etc. and goes against Western instincts that favour liberal democracies and certain freedoms e.g. of the press, expression etc. In the case of the Soviet Union, the differing nationalisms in the constituent republics made it harder to keep together along with the nationalisms of the occupied Eastern Bloc countries.

Nazism and Communism fell, in essence, for the same reason. Its the same reason Napoleon fell, and the reason the British Empire lost the North American colonies. They spread themselves out too thin, militarily...in most cases, especially in very bad weather--when that still meant something in war. Napoleon and Hitler just forgot how damn cold and unforgiving the winters get as you head east through Asia. Back then, that kind of lack of preparedness in battle would get your Empire butt kicked.

As far as Communism (I assume we're talking about the Russian kind)...their biggest mistake was year after year of crippling their ground military in Afghanistan (ahem). Once they were unable to govern every province of the Republic with an iron fist, a faster and more global media began to infiltrate the masses...creating the early bubbles of sectarian revolution.

Because you cannot keep people downtrodden forever. There comes a time when we say enough is enough.
Also believe it or not it costs a huge amount of money to control people. That is why your government baulks at the idea of building a wall on the Mexican border.

They were both despotic, socialistic governments that were not for the people. They were diametrically opposed to a democracy and served only to oppress and downgrade the people they ruled.

Any system of government which makes capitalism in the general population impossible is doomed to failure.
