Boxing day from what I read dates way back when Upper Class would give boxes if food stuffs to the lower class.
It has evolved kind of into what christmas is for us, exchanging gifts with family and freinds.

I live in Canada and my understanding of Boxing Day was that after exchanging presents on Christmas Day, the next day you were to box up some of your old stuff that got replaced with new and give the old stuff to charity.

This is also St. Stephen's Day ("the feast of Stephen").
There is nothing definite as to the origins of Boxing Day, but by Victorian times it was traditional to give presents to servants, a sort of delayed Christmas Day for them, as on the day itself their duties would have been heavier than normal. My grandmother, who was in service from 1915 to 1928, recalled this as being "their [the servants'] day".
