since i will be getting bunion surgery and feet will be in casts,i will have to probably use a bedpan. I will ask the nurse what i will use, she will probably say a bedpan. But since i feel uncomterable of having her see me, is it alright if i ask for something simpler like a diaper. Do they usualy let you choose the method you want to do, bed pan or diaper? is diaper a smater choice. I will be spending the night for 1 night. I am 12 years old.

Wow, bunions at your age is unusual.....Although you will be embarrassed to go number 2 in a bedpan, because she will have to clean you, she will also have to clean you with a diaper...She will not stay there while you are on the pan is you ask for privacy..Now if you have to urinate, they have this thing for men called a urinal, basically a jug, which you hold and pee in and then hang on the side of your bed, and she picks it up later....Hope this answers your questions, I had surgery on one foot for a bunion, and they put a pin in, but no cast. It hurt for a while, but is not much better than all the pain from the bunion.....

You are a little young for bunion surgery.

You will be offered a bedpan, or urinal if you are male. A diaper is NOT an option. It would be worse to have a nurse clean you up then to have her sit you on a pan and then take the pan away.

The nurse would have to touch and see you with a diaper. Silly choice!

I know that you may be shy but choose the bedpan. You don't really want to be sitting in your stool all day. I know that you may feel uncomfortable, but the nurses do this all the time. If you are that shy, see if they may be able to give you a nurse who is the same sex as you are or if there is a same sex tech that can help you.

After your surgery, I think they will probably let you stand at the bedside or use a bedside commode You can ask for a male nurse or orderly to help you. Maybe a male relative could stay with you to help you. Talk to your doctor or a hospital staff member before the surgeruy if at all possible about your concerns. I hope you recover very well after your surgery.
