As the rate of exchange for currency changes almost daily, a good place to find out what the current exchange rate is www.xe.com/ucc. They have lots of different currencies that you can exchange between there.

Using today's exchange rate, the above website has said:
1 GBP = 1.95 US Dollars.
1 US Dollar = 0.51 GBP.

Assuming that you are talking about British pounds, a US dollar is worth about 55 pence.
