The Normandy Landings started on 6th June.
The breakout from the beachead really began at St. Lo on the 25-27th JULY.
On the 26th of June, after five days of assault, came the fall of Cherbourg, the first major port captured by the allies. On the 26th, on the eastern end of the beachead, British forces were engaged in Operation Epsom, an attempt to drive southwards, west of Caen.
(The article which prompted the "fox in the orchard" reply refers generally to the fighting in the Normandy bocage, with Rommel, "The Fox" as the leading enemy general. If it was *published*, as it says, on 26th June 1944 it is surprisingly frank and detailed, referring to events only about ten days earlier!)

The Normandy invasion (known as D-day) the invasion started on June 6th and lasted for weeks until we (the allies) could secure enough land for the allies to make a more progress into Europe.
