It all started back in the day when the only women who could afford clothes with buttons were rich white ladies who had servants. The buttons were on the opposite side, so that the servant could easily button the lady's blouse.

Women used to be dressed by assistants, hence the buttons had to be buttoned from the opposite side. Men on the other hand normally dressed themselves. The assistants are long gone (for most people) but the buttons have stayed the same.

Besides the tradition of women getting dressed by others, it is a good way to tell the two sexes shirts apart.

if the buttons are on the left then its a blouse not a shirt
