It doesnt matter what you write, just write from the heart, he will appriciate it. But besides that, just be there for him. Hang out with him, keep him company, keep him busy. When my mom died I don't know what I would of done if my friends wouldn't of been there. They just hung out with me and helped keep my mind of off the whole situation. They are what saved me during one of the most horrible chapters in my life. I will never forget them being there for me and I will forever be thankfull that had them in my life.

tell your friend that you are very sorry for their loss of dad and you will be their friend. also tell them that they should pray to Jesus for comfort and guidance in this time... and that their Dad is in Jesus's hands.
also- big Rob... to know they can go on in life and do things to make their Dad proud is a wonderful thought. It is ok tho to be weak and strong at the same time.

Just tell him how sorry you are that he lost his dad, and if he needs someone to talk to he can call on you.
