I began using the Nuvaring birth control at the start of my last cycle (november 19) Soon after my period ended my fiance and I had intercourse, but he didn't pull out. The instructions say that the birth control takes effect after 7 days..I do believe this incident happened on the 7th day. It is the 18th now, and I began bleeding, thinking it was my period..5 hours later and there has been barely any flow and it is dark. I usually have a pretty heavy period. Could this be happening because of starting birth control, or should i get a pregnancy test?

You are probably having what is called breakthrough bleeding which is very common during the first month of taking the pill. I had it at least four different days my first month on the pill. However considering when you had intercourse, I would have some concern about pregnancy because a week or so after your period ends (if you're not on birth control) is usually the most fertile time of the month. Although it's probably way to soon for a test to register positive at this point.

Getting a pregnancy test wouldn't be a bad idea, but I doubt you're pregnant. I also just switched to the Nuvaring, and noticed my periods are A LOT lighter than before. It could just be a side-effect of the Ring. However, my period ran its course. If yours stopped abruptly or something, I'd see a doctor and get the test, just to be sure.

YOU COULD TAKE A TEST JUST TO MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER. USUALLY WHEN ON THE PILL YOUR PERIOD IS A LOT LIGHTER.

You should get a doctor appointment.
