My son is 3 months, 2 weeks old and is drinking 6 - 8 ounces a day every 3 hours. Is this normal? He really has only taken 8 ounces at night right before bed. He screams his head off after 6 ounces so I tried to see if he still wanted more to drink and he did. He is a great sleeper. Goes down around 7PM and wakes up 4 or 5am to drink and back to bed till 7:30AM.

My son is 3 1/2 months old as well and drinks about 4oz every three hours. From everything that I have read the usual is 4-6 oz every feeding totaling 32 oz daily (The Baby Whisperer) However, if your son wants more and drinks more than I would say that he is probably hungry or thirsty. If you are really concerned that he is eating too much consult a pediatrician and see what he says. As long as your baby is growing and not gaining too much weight I am sure he will say it is okay.

But, you have to remember that every baby is different and even though when they say "normal" it is really just as "normal" to be different. If that makes any sense. For example remember when you were pregnant and they said to you that morning sickness is normal...well it is just as normal to not have morning sickness it depends on the individual and the same with babies.

Have you thought about putting him on baby food yet. I know it's a no-no, but my Ben is almost 3 months old and was eating 6-7 ounces every 2 hours!! We put him on regular food (rice cereal with applesauce, carrots, peas, squash, etc) three times a day. He has 3-4 bottles throughout the day and 2 ounces around 4:30 am.

Sometimes babies are just HUNGRY. And this is him letting you know it's time to go to the baby food. I know doctors warn against it, but all babies are different. Ben is growing at a normal rate, having normal BMs, and is just a generally happy baby. Try it for a few days. If you notice positive improvements, continue on.

You could also try putting the rice you get in the boxes into his bottle. We put a scoop of rice (the scoop you get in the cans of formula) per 6 ounces of baby formula. That helped, too.

Has he always eaten a lot? The growth spurts are at 3 wks 6 wks, 3 months, 6 months...so it could be a growth spurt. This is normal for your child if he isn't throwing up and is having normal and regular diaper changes and stools.
If he isn't wetting a lot, then see your pediatrician (5 -8 diapers).
Great web sites for newbie parents are out there. I like www.babycenter.com.
good luck

I think that babies have a built in system that tells them that they need to eat or when they are full. I don't feel that they have an in between. It doesn't sound like your son is eating too much, or too little.

When my son was newborn (we were not even out of the hospital) he was killing off 4 oz bottles of formula. Also he was getting sugar water inbetween his feedings because of jaundice. The nurses yelled at me saying that I was feeding him too much and I yelled back and told them that when he was full he would stop eating.

Just follow your "mother's intuition" and follow your son's lead. Speak to your pediatrician when you are not sure. You may also want to consider introducing solid foods when the formula/breast milk does not seem to be enough to satisfy him.

Good luck and congratulations on your new child.

My son is 9 months and drinks 8 oz. He had about 5 oz at your child's age, but every baby is different...

The fact is, you have to read signals from your baby. If he wants more, give it to him. He will stop when he's had enough. All the baby books say to give him enough food until he doesn't want anymore. He's a growing boy!

Yes, This is normal. Well, that is what my daughter was taking at his age. She is 6 months now. I think that if they are hungry... then feed them!!!! And she is fine. She has not had a problem with it. Her doctor says that it is okay. But you could ask his doctor and see what he tells you.

that sounds normal to me. and when they drink 8 oz. and want more you can begin giving them some rice cereal and pears. that way they can eat foods and not drink more than eight ounces of milk or formula. good luck and merry christmas to you and your family.

Just feed him what he is hungry for - that is what my doctor recommended. If he eats, let him. If he seems full, don't force him to have more. Sometimes he will eat less, sometimes he will eat more. If you are really worried, consult his doctor, but he sounds normal to me and I don't think you should worry :)
