Even the adults persist in pretending they're adorable manga/anime characters. I'm not saying it's a bad thing (but I'm not saying it's a good thing, either), but why are they all cutesy? They do the peace sign in photographs and draw cute little smilies and things...
Why?

It is a huge cultural thing. I myself respect it, although it is mass manipulation of media at it's best, because they are not afraid to look silly. I like being silly, it does not mean I am any less intelligent. They sure as hell are not, they are revolutionizing technology at an exponential rate, a lot better than their US counterpart.

Whats funny is that 100+ years ago they were some of the most ruthless badasses on the planet, with their samurai warrior culture and all. Even during WWII they were some hard motherfu__ers. But now theyve become all cutsesy. I really cant explain it.
I dont really know what you mean about adults "pretending to be" those characters. I dont know whats up with that peace sign that everyone over there is always doing.
Maybe its because they are cute. Japanese girls are very cute (though never stunningly gorgeous)

It's not just the Japanese, as far as I know.
Many people in other countries like Singapore, Korea (other Asian countries) do that too.
Besides, what's wrong with being cute? It's better than being all serious and so-called grown-up, right?
That's probably why a lot of Japanese (and Asians) look really young even when they're 40+. They're happy.

Maybe Korean women are more obsessed with being cute. Most of them doesn't seem to mind taking plastic surgery. But Japanese mind a bit.

That is a good question, but maybe you should ask:
Why aren't America and the rest of the world more like them?
Maybe there is something to be learned from them?
Maybe they're not the weird one (maybe it's us)?
