I actually tried out for the show years ago.
I went to L.A. and checked in to see when the next "auditions" were going to be. Unfortunately, they were on the LAST day I was going to be in L.A. But I tried out anyway. Here's how it went:
First off, everyone that shows up was given a written test featuring puzzles that had letters missing. Your job was to complete as many of the puzzles as possible in a given time limit.
The "tests" were then validated by those giving them. Those with unacceptable scores were asked to leave the room. The others (myself included) continued on. MOST of those that showed up were eliminated in this written portion.
Next, the remaining persons got to play a bogus game of Wheel Of Fortune. Those running the "show/test" had a terrible looking cardboard wheel that they spun for you. One part of this "test" was to see how excited you would get when playing the game for "big bucks". Even when they would land on Bankrupt, the host would manually turn to wheel to point to some huge amount like 10 million dollars! Well, since it wasn't real, how excited could one really get? Anyway, they had a puzzle to play and started in the front row and went along to each person to ask what letter they wanted and if they could solve the puzzle.
After that, they took photos of each of us and told us to put down a phone number where we could be reached in the event we were chosen to be on the show. Like I mentioned before, this was the LAST day I was scheduled to be in L.A. I didn't even have lodging booked for that night in town. They told me "No problem. Just call in first thing the next morning and ask the secretary to check the list of names" to see if I had been selected. So I found lodging and stayed over one more night.
The next morning I called the number they gave me and spoke to the secretary. She had no idea of what "list" I was talking about and had never heard/seen of one before for the show!
So that was it. I couldn't contact those that I had met duirng the test, and they had no way to contact me either since I didn't have a phone number for them to call (no, I didn't have a cell phone at the time).
But anyway, that's the process I went through. I'm guessing it's pretty much the same nowadays as well.
Let's just say that you shouldn't expect to meet Vanna and Pat during the test sessions!
Good luck.
