metals are to left of stair-step line and across the bottom (black on the table)
nonmetals are to right of stair-step line and H (black, red, or blue)
metalloids border the stair-step line (black)
mercury is the only liquid metal (blue)
**my periodic table has solids black, liquids blue, and gases red
