I found a frog living in my basement, but I'm afraid to touch it in case it's poisonous. If it's not I might keep it!

I'm sure the frog you have found is probably not poisonous...usually the most poisonous frogs are very bright colored and live in tropical rainforests...and even most of them can't kill you...but if you live in the united states i assure you there are no frogs here that will harm you

1. The only 'poisonous' frogs live in Central and South America, they are neon colored tree frogs called Poison Dart Frogs, and they are only poisonous if ingested or if you handle them with a deep cut on your hands. So you're 99.9% safe, unless you live in South America and are currently bleeding profusely.

2. Don't keep it. Wild animals usually die in captivity, there's no way you can properly replicate the habitat and diet the frog belongs in. It's cruel to capture and keep a wild creature as a pet. Set it free, and if you want a pet frog, first, read some books on keeping frogs, then go to a petstore and buy a frog that was bred and raised in captivity and won't stress out and die on you.

The only guideline I can give you is - as more colorful a frog is as more poisonous it is.
Maybe you should check the Internet if you find a picture of your basement frog.
Regarding the existence of deadly poisonous frogs I would not recommend the "try and error" method.

Good luck!

Check out Amazon.com and do a search for "Field Guide to Amphibians" and you'll find quite a few books dealing with different regions of the World and even a few dealing with specific regions of the U.S. Order the one for the region where you live, or just head to your local bookstore and flip through it there.

If you decide to keep the frog make sure you get good info on doing it as some species are difficult to keep in captivity. You might try talking to someone at a pet shop.

Either way, do not force a wild frog into captivity. Just capture him and release him back outdoors where he belongs. If you want a frog, go to the petstore and buy one, atleast they were raised in captivity.
