People are generally pretty poor. They need shoes, clothing, medicines. They do lack a lot of what North Americans consider necessities. HOWEVER, you should be very careful about this. It is illegal to bring undeclared gifts into the country. The people who work at the resorts are for the most part employed by the Cuban gov't. A gift to the wrong person could land you in a Cuban jail cell faster than you can say Mojito. I met a Canadian who was jailed and had his yacht confiscated for bringing medical supplies into Havanna.

I went to Cuba some months ago and they ask you for: toothpaste, lotion, candy, soap, chocolate, bubble gum, etc. Do not give them money, they can not spend it.
