Why don't they just say they are divorced (or widowed)? There's no reason to be ashamed.

It has nothing to do with being ashamed. They are calling it what it is. A single mom is a single mom no matter why she is. There's no use labeling a section of single moms as "divorced", another sect as "never married" and yet another for "widowed". Regardless of circumstance, they are all single moms.

Because I AM thank you. What makes you think it's "shameful" to admit being divorced or widowed? More than being an unmarried mother? Yes, I'm divorced, but who cares? I'm first a mother THEN a divorcee.

Nothing to be ashamed of really. But single-mother is the one, who's charged with the upbringing of the child all alone... she may be widowed, divorced or unmarried.

I say I'm divorced when I have to but my daughter doesn't like to talk about her dad(he's hurt her so much) so if people ask I'll tell them but I'd prefer people to think that I wasn't married, it was a very painful time in my life that I want to forget

it's not shame, they ARE single...if you are divorced you are single, if you are widowed you are single...where in there does it say shame? when u meet someone for the first time do u tell them your whole life story?

How they got that way, whether thru divorce or widowhood or never having been married in the first place, is nobody's business but their own.
