Behaviorism which includes classical and operant conditioning is the ansewer. But this is not about knowing the name of the method this is about mastering the art of applying the method. If that's what you want then visit Cesar Millan's website http://www.dogpsychologycenter.com/
Millan is a subject matter expert on dog behaviorism. He train people and rehabilitate dogs. I recommend you watching his TV program: The Dog Whisperer at National Geographic Channel.

Love that comes from your heart is the best approach. Even though an animal respond to reward and reinforcement, I believe animals have the best senses. They respond to simple cues like body language, tone of voice. There's much we can do to 'train' ourselves to listen to how they are responding to us.

Conditioning (rewards and punishments). Isn't that all that would work? I may be forgetting a theory or two, but I don't think rationalization or insight would get through to a dog much less change a dog's behavior.

Just conditioning. You know, Pavloff and his training was by reward. for the right behavior.

Classical conditioning as already pointed out. Pavlovian etc. If you want to research it search for "classical conditioning" or conditioned stimulus, uncondition stimulus, etc might also yield the results you are looking for.

Reward and Punishment. When they do good, give them a treat, pet them, or both while saying things like, "Oh, good boy!" When they do wrong, scold them for it in a firm tone, gentley tapping their nose with your index and middle fingers together, and put them outside for awhile. It worked wonders with my cat.
