It's a prechristian symbol, of the continuation of life thru the darkest part of the year. Pre-Christian versions of this custom were practiced in what is now Germany and other places in Europe where lives depend on the agricultural cycle and winters are harsh. Christians can re-interpret it in their own way of thinking, but it's older than Christianity, as are most Christmas symbols and customs.

When I was a child, I remember the first christmas tree my dad brought home. I was about 5 years old. You could smell pine throughout the whole house. Even though the tree had to be cut down to make a christmas tree, it symbolized for me the end of a year that contained the good times and the bad times in our little home. It showed the love my dad had for us to get us a tree, considering he is from the country born and raised on the farm. with the light and the presents, it made my dad have hope for good health for himself and his family and maybe a few more dollars to spend. I dont know if he felt that we didnt have alot, but let me tell you, we had food every night. We might not have had meat every night, but we ate every night. We had a roof over our heads and clothes to keep warm. My mom got alot of our things from the salvation army, but as children we were excited just to get anything. That first tree was a new beginning for us and things did get better. Merry Christmas and God Bless

evergreen = the seasonal death thing, the greenery of these trees signified rebirth or eternal life, part of pagan religion co-opted by Christianity (the part of burning human flesh in giant wicker statues on the solstice they skipped for some reason) such as practiced by ancient Celts/Picts. Look into the lore associated with Christmas Holly and Ivy, and the "green man".
